All three can provide psychotherapy, and the title tells you about training and regulation rather than about quality of care. A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and trained specifically in psychotherapy at the master's level. A psychologist holds a doctoral or master's degree in psychology and, in Ontario, is one of the few professions that can formally communicate a diagnosis. A social worker registered with the OCSWSSW may also provide therapy, often alongside case management and connecting you to community supports. None of them prescribe medication; that is a physician or nurse practitioner. If you specifically need a formal diagnosis, start with a psychologist or your doctor. If you are looking for ongoing talk therapy, a Registered Psychotherapist is a direct fit. Meet our Registered Psychotherapists.

There is no threshold you have to cross first. People come because something specific has happened, and just as often because nothing dramatic has happened and things still feel heavy, stuck or effortful. If you are weighing it up, that is usually reason enough to have a conversation. The free 15-minute consult exists for exactly this: no commitment, and an honest answer about whether therapy is the right fit right now. Book a free consult.

Yes. Sessions are private, records are kept secure, and nothing is shared with anyone, including family or your employer, without your written consent. Registered Psychotherapists are bound by CRPO standards and by Ontario's health privacy law (PHIPA). There are a small number of legal exceptions that every regulated therapist in Ontario shares, and your therapist will walk you through them in the first session before you share anything. If you use workplace benefits, your insurer sees that a claim was made, not what you discussed. Read our privacy policy.
